Suicide Prevention in 2020. Let’s get to work!

988: Coming soon to a phone near you

In December, the FCC unanimously approved 988, the new “9-1-1″ for mental health.” This new system will transform the network that is currently the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It will make access to help even easier and, we believe, help remove reservation for anyone wondering if the can call. Currently, anyone can call for any reason, but many believe that to call one must be considering suicide. Though not yet operational, our contact at the FCC anticipates 988 being fully operational by late 2021 or early 2022. Click here or visit 988KS.org to learn more about the proposed changes.

Join ourBoard of Directors

The board of Headquarters, Inc. is seeking 4-5 community-minded people to join the board of directors. We also have a few openings on our working committees which plan events, help with policy, budgets, awareness, and marketing among other things.

If you’re interested in putting your talents and passion to work, we’re having a casual mixer next Monday when you can learn more about joining the board of directors or one of our committees. We’ll have refreshments, you’ll get to meet everyone, ask questions, and hear from our CEO about what it means to be a board or committee member. You don’t need any previous experience, you don’t need to be rich, you just need to be passionate about helping others and willing to give your time.

Welcome Jared!

Jared Auten, LMSW, began as a Headquarters Volunteer Counselor in Spring of 2013. Previously, Jared was a crisis therapist at Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and a case manager at Elizabeth Layton Center. During his education at the University of Kansas, Jared was a social welfare intern with Headquarters, Willow Domestic Violence Center, and Bert Nash. For the past several years, Jared has helped train many volunteer counselor training groups, making him an excellent fit as he starts his new role today as Volunteer Training Coordinator at Headquarters, Inc.

This new position enables Headquarters, Inc. to increase the number of volunteer counselors trained every year as we work to increase call capacity in our crisis center to serve more Kansans.
